“You all are amazing! You have so much to be proud of! Wait, how many of you were admitted to UCSD? Wow!”
Those were some of the sentiments expressed by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher during her visit to Gompers Preparatory Academy (GPA) on April 7. The Assemblywoman, after working at the State Capitol until 11pm the night before and taking a 5:30am flight to San Diego, took time out of her busy schedule to visit GPA. She was welcomed by the GPA Cheerleaders with several acts, including a special “LORENA” cheer and got a “sneak peek” of the upcoming Motown show that will be presented by Musical Production students. Many parents were in attendance and they expressed their appreciation for the Assembly woman’s service to our community and our state. Ms. Gonzalez Fletcher shook hands and spoke to every student in the Class of 2017, learning which colleges they will attend next year and their future career goals. The GPA Family was proud to host the Assemblywoman and we look forward to hosting her during future visits.

GPA Paves the Way for CCSA

The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) has assembled a first-of-its kind dataset combining data from the University of California (UC) system, the Cal State University (CSU) system, and all California public high schools, which demonstrates that charter schools are helping increase access to college for thousands of historically disadvantaged youth in California, including minority, low income and first-generation college-going students. As a school that ensures 100% of its graduates take the A-G requirements for UC/CSU admission, Gompers Preparatory Academy was selected as the host site for the CCSA press conference where this data was released to the public. GPA is a trailblazer for both charter schools and traditional public schools in its work to prepare students for graduation and college. The Class of 2016 at Gompers Prep has achieved unprecedented success in college admissions, including 76% of seniors being accepted to the University of California, and 89% accepted to a public or private 4-year university.
Author Dave Burgess Brightens GPA’s Monday Morning!
GPA’s staff was ecstatic for Dave Burgess’s visit– enough to come in on a Monday morning fully dressed in costume to offer a warm welcome to our guest. We would like to give a huge thanks to Dave Burgess, author of the powerful book Teach Like A Pirate, for sharing his inspirational message with our entire staff early Monday morning! His dynamic presentation was a gift to return to after spring break and gave our GPA family the chance to hear the book we’ve been studying come to life; enabling us all to reignite our passion and take our work to the next level. Not only do we want our staff to be able to “teach like pirates,” we are also excited to infuse the same values in our students, so they can “learn like pirates!”
Once again, thank you Dave Burgess for spending time with us! You are welcome anytime.
Eagle Playwrights In The Making

Drama is not something Gompers Prep is a part of – unless, of course, our students are participating in a Playwrights Project. Our 7th and 10th grade students worked with a resident teacher from the Playwrights Project, Ms. Ordon, for six weeks and were not only able to use their creativity to write plays of their own, but they also watched them come to life in a final presentation with professional actors! What an amazing opportunity to have a guest teacher guide our students to become playwrights, and to have these talented actors visit our GPA campus and realize our young Eagles’ visions. Here’s to our future playwrights in the making!
Many thanks to our generous donors, the Weil family, for their continued support of GPA!
