A Letter to Our Community

Dear GPA Community,

As the Chairman of GPA’s Board of Directors and a founder of GPA, I feel it is important to address community concerns that have been brought to the attention of the GPA Board. Some of these concerns related to GPA teachers’ treatment of GPA students while others raised concerns relating to behavior attributed to some members of the GPA teachers’ union.

First and foremost, thank you parents for using your voices. Our school was founded by the community and parents who used their voices to turn a failing district school into a thriving college preparatory charter school. We are indebted to our parents, because it was their unwavering belief that our community deserves good things, and their tireless efforts in not allowing us to stop fighting for equity and access that has made us who we are today.

We will continue to listen and take action when there are concerns. Whenever a complaint is brought to the attention of the GPA Board of Directors or GPA Leadership, a thorough investigation is completed and necessary action is taken when the investigation warrants it. If you have concerns regarding the way in which any GPA employee has interacted with your student, it is important that you bring that concern to GPA Leadership right away so that the issue can be fully addressed. Because the GPA Board of Directors, Leadership and staff want your student to be successful at GPA and have the best experience possible, we ask that you bring any concerns to our attention promptly. If you feel uncomfortable doing so, we have a Uniform Complaint Procedure on our website that can be used as well.

The board would also like to update you in regards to an initial decision issued last fall on an unfair practice charge filed by the union that held that GPA had bargained in bad faith and that it had retaliated against one of its teachers. We are very pleased to report that this decision was overturned by the Public Employment Relations Board and the findings of bad faith and retaliation were dismissed. Unless GPA and the union are able to reach an agreement on this charge, GPA will have an opportunity to fully defend itself against these allegations later this summer.

The last several years have been challenging for a number of reasons and have tested the fabric of our community. Our students have no time for us to take our eyes off their futures, we must all support the mission of GPA which has helped thousands of students be successful. We continue to be extremely proud of our students, parents, leadership, staff and community for choosing GPA.

Como Presidente de la Mesa Directiva de GPA y fundador de GPA, creo que es importante abordar las inquietudes de la comunidad que se han puesto en conocimiento de la Mesa Directiva de GPA. Algunas de estas cuestiones están relacionadas con el trato que los profesores de GPA dan a los estudiantes de GPA, mientras que otras plantean aspectos relacionados con el comportamiento atribuido a algunos miembros del sindicato de profesores de GPA. 

En primer lugar, le damos las gracias a los padres por hacer uso de sus voces. Nuestra escuela fue fundada por la comunidad y los padres que emplearon sus voces para convertir una escuela del distrito que no funcionaba en una escuela autónoma exitosa que prepara a nuestros estudiantes para la universidad. Estamos en deuda con nuestros padres, porque fue su inquebrantable creencia de que nuestra comunidad merece cosas buenas, y sus incansables esfuerzos por no dejar de luchar por la igualdad y los derechos a tener acceso a lo que nos ha convertido en lo que hoy somos.

Seguiremos escuchando y tomando medidas cuando haya inquietudes. Cada vez que se presenta una queja a la Mesa Directiva de GPA o a un miembro del Equipo de Liderazgo de GPA, se lleva a cabo una investigación minuciosa y se toman las medidas necesarias cuando la investigación lo amerita. Si tiene alguna inquietud sobre la forma en que un empleado de GPA ha interactuado con su estudiante, es importante que plantee esa inquietud a un miembro del Equipo de Liderazgo de GPA de inmediato para que el asunto pueda ser abordado en su totalidad. Dado que la Mesa Directiva, la Dirección y el personal de GPA quieren que su estudiante tenga éxito en GPA y que tenga la mejor experiencia posible, le pedimos que nos comunique cualquier inquietud de inmediato. Si se siente incómodo haciéndolo, tenemos un Procedimiento Uniforme de Quejas en nuestro sitio web que también puede ser utilizado.

Asimismo, la mesa directiva desea actualizarlos en relación con una decisión inicial emitida el pasado otoño sobre una acusación de práctica desleal presentada por el sindicato que sostenía que GPA había negociado de mala fe y que había tomado represalias contra uno de sus profesores. Nos complace informar de que esta decisión ha sido revocada por la Junta de Relaciones Laborales Públicas (PERB) y revocaron las conclusiones de mala fe y represalias. A menos que GPA y el sindicato puedan llegar a un acuerdo sobre esta acusación, GPA tendrá la oportunidad de defenderse plenamente de estas acusaciones a finales de este verano.

Los últimos años han sido complicados por varias razones y han puesto a prueba la estructura de nuestra comunidad. Nuestros estudiantes no tienen tiempo para que nosotros desviemos la mirada de su futuro, todos debemos apoyar la misión de GPA que ha ayudado a miles de estudiantes a tener éxito. Seguimos estando extremadamente orgullosos de nuestros estudiantes, padres, liderazgo, personal y comunidad por elegir GPA.
