College Class
Rationale: College class serves as an opportunity to connect and communicate with the student body in a formal setting that simulates a large college lecture hall.  With a high regard to respect and discipline, students are educated on school wide events, areas of growth, areas of achievement and character education as it relates to school culture.  College class also serves as a platform for students to learn public speaking skills that will serve in other formal settings.  College class is the foundation of school culture that supports the overall instructional program at GPA.

Standards:
  • Students are escorted to college class by their teachers in a straight single file line.
  • Students enter the auditorium without talking.
  • Students sit every other seat unless directed otherwise.
  • Students sit quietly without talking until the college class begins.
  • Students may begin to work on the prelude if one is available.
  • Students must sit quietly without talking until all students are present.
  • Disciplined behavior is the order.
  • Students are expected to bring their planner, and writing tools for note taking.
  • Students should be prepared to be "cold called"
  • Staff is expected to attend college class, take notes, and immediately reinforce the message of the day within their own classroom through class discussion, charts, or graphic organizers.

Character Education Books/Texts Used

  • Manners: This book makes the elementary rules of courtesy and thoughtfulness easy to remember.

  • No Excuses: This book focuses on the topic of excuses and how they can do more harm than we realize.  The book demonstrates how excuses go far beyond "my dog ate my homework", and can actually become words that prevent your students from reaching his or her potential.
  • Don't Laugh at Me: For anyone who's ever been bullied or been a bully, this book illuminates what it's like to be laughed at and to be called names.
  • Through the Cracks: This book reflects the dilemma facing young people in many of today's educational institutions.  If young people in many of today's educational institutions.  If young people are not challenged to utilize all of their talents in the learning process and to participate in creative ways, they will surely "shrink" as well the hopes for the future of our country.
